Assessments, advice and help with costs

Care needs and carer's assessments, wheelchair services, grants for adaptations, and where to get advice on benefits.

Care needs assessment

Anyone who appears to need care and support can ask their local council for a free needs assessment. It looks at what you find difficult day to day and what would help. Contact your council's adult social care team.

Carer's assessment

If you care for someone, you can ask for your own assessment, even if the person you care for has not had one.

Wheelchair services

NHS wheelchair services assess people with a long term need for a wheelchair. You usually need a referral from your GP, therapist or hospital team.

Grants for home adaptations

A Disabled Facilities Grant from your council can help pay for changes such as a level-access shower, ramps or a stairlift. Grants for adults are means tested. An OT assessment is usually needed first.

Benefits advice

You may be entitled to benefits such as Personal Independence Payment (PIP) or Attendance Allowance. Free, independent advice services can help you check what you can claim and support you with forms.
